As the season 2 premiere opens up, Gene and Pat run into a horse thief, that stole Pat's horse many years ago. Gene and Pat do not recognize him, but Champion seems too, very clearly. Gene and Pat save Elaine Castle, and she offers them a job as hands on her and her brother's ranch. Another hand, who secretly works for the wealthy Matt Nixon, displeases Gene because of his brutal methods of taking care of horses. Gene tracks down stolen horses to Nixon's place.
